WESTERN SAHARA AND AUTONOMY PLAN

Morocco to submit autonomy project to UN in April

Morocco will submit its Sahara autonomy project to the United Nations in April, said here Thursday, Moroccan Minister of Communication Nabil benabdellah after a meeting of the cabinet council.

“Prime Minister Driss Jettou presented a first version of autonomy project for the Sahara which is based upon three axes: Moroccan sovereignty, taking into consideration the social and cultural particularities of the region and international criteria relating to autonomy” said Mr. Benabdellah.

“A second part of consultations on the autonomy project will be with held with political parties, notables and representatives of Sahrawi tribes- as well as at the international level- before submitting the project in April to the UN” informed Mr. Benabdellah.

In December 2007, CORCAS members, presided over by Mr. Khalihenna Ould Errachid proposed to HM the King Mohammed VI “the setting up of a local government, a parliament and an autonomous judicial authority” in the territory.
